The first heat wave of the season is already a record-breaking one - and don't expect any relief over the weekend.
Environment Canada said the city exceeded today's predicted high of 32 degrees, with temperatures reaching a record-breaking 33 degrees at 2 p.m. - and humidity is making it feel more like it’s 41.
The previous high on this day was in 1999, when the mercury reached 31.9 degrees.
And the weekend is going to be hot and sticky, with little chance of relief, an official from Environment Canada said today.
Late last night, Environment Canada predicted severe thunderstorms, frequent intense lightning, large hail and damaging winds would make for a wet and wild weekend, however, Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada said, there’s little chance of heavy rain the next few days.Showers are likely to start falling during the commute home as an unstable system moves over Lake Ontario into Toronto from Michigan. There’s a slight chance it will turn into a thunderstorm overnight, but Kimbell doesn’t predict it will be severe.
“It’s going to remain very warm,” Kimbell said of the weekend, predicting that the lowest temperature will only be 20 degrees.
Saturday is expected to be very sunny, hot and humid. Don’t expect rain to help relieve the heat because it’s not likely to come.
Skies will remain fickle on Sunday as a mix of sun and clouds and a 30 per cent chance of rain is expected.
Although temperatures are expected to stay in the low 30s, it’s going to feel more like 40.
Looking for a coolers spot? Temperatures will only reach 24 by the lake.
Cloudy skies and cooler temperatures are expected to return on Monday when there’s a 60 per cent chance of showers. The hottest temperature is predicted to be 29.
A humidex warning remains for most of southern Ontario from Barrie to Windsor, including the GTA and cottage country.
This year’s transition from spring to summer is more abrupt than usual due to a pronounced warm front crossing southern Ontario, according to the Environment Canada website.
The normal high for June 6 is 23C, over 10 degrees below today’s forecasted high.
