With the tournament opener looming, the people of Berne danced into the wee small hours when the famous Bundesplatz turned UEFA EURO 2008™ Fan Zone.
Outdoor ballroom
As the city's president, Alexander Tschäppät, completed his short speech and countless dancers elegantly dressed in ball gowns and tuxedos took to one of Switzerland most famous squares, the heavens above opened and the rain lashed down. With the cover from a colourful umbrella, or even without, the crowd stayed put and turned the Bundesplatz into the biggest dance floor in all of Switzerland.
Friendly atmosphere
The Berne Symphony Orchestra provided the music and set the tone of the event as children and couples of all ages spun around merrily to provide a worthy opening for the host city. Following the ball, Bern's best known 'mundart' (a capella) bands, Patent Ochsner and Züri Wedt entertained the crowd. The demand was unbelievable and it seemed as if no one wanted to miss as much as a second of either concert, with the result being that the Bundesplatz looked as if it might burst at the seams. The festival developed into a massive party which lasted well into the early hours in Berne where a friendly and positive atmosphere reigned.
